KEY Oklahoma City

key oklahoma cityEvery city has an iconic restaurant – the one that is the fabric of the community. The restaurant that has weathered the test of time. The restaurant that is the locals “go to” place for great atmosphere, service and consistency - but most importantly great food.

Since 1964, an atmosphere of tragedy hangs over the quaint old estate near NE 63 and Eastern/Martin Luther King. It was then, in less than a year, death struck three times. The murders were never solved - only the legend, and the spirits within it live on. After more than half a century in operation - followed by a couple of months dark - The Haunted House reopened July 4, 2015, with a new owner, Patrick Boylan, as J. Bruner's at The Haunted House.

Nine years ago, Boylan rescued J. Bruner's Steakhouse in Osage Beach, Mo., from an untimely demise. Now, Boylan waves his re-animating wand at the iconic restaurant owned and operated for 51 years by Marian Thibault, who died in May.

Driving down a mile-long road in the woods, one finds themselves in front of a 1930’s stone mansion seven miles from downtown OKC. From the outside, it doesn't look like what you might expect, but walk in and everything changes! Inside it is a cozy place that has an award-winning menu and classic decor that provide guests with a one-of-a-kind fine dining experience.

Start with Lobster Macaroni and Cheese, hearty enough to be a small entrée. Enjoy a lettuce wedge, J. Bruner's Salad or Lobster Bisque. For entrees, choose the Prime Rib or 18-Ounce Cowboy Ribeye, hand selected very top 2 percent USDA Prime beef and wet-aged at least 27 days. Seafood selections include the Broiled Lobster or John Bruner's Original Batter-Fried Lobster Tail – which is the real story here. Batter-frying a lobster tail feels like an affront to all that's holy about the lobster-eating experience. Crisp and tender, the batter-fried lobster tail is a balance of rich savory and delicate sweetness.

Finish your evening with a brandy ice, which has been conjured up to perfection for half a century.

J. Bruner's at The Haunted House, 7101 Miramar Blvd., opens at 5 p.m. nightly. Reservations are suggested by calling 405-478-1417 or visiting
