Families visiting Oklahoma City should take the opportunity to explore the Power and Prestige Children’s Gallery at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum thru May 14. The exhibition offers hands-on crafts and continuous programming to encourage children to explore the West.
The new activity space takes visitors into the histories and cultures of the American Plains Indians, and complements the temporary Power and Prestige: Headdresses of the American Plains exhibition. Younger generations will participate in make-and-take activity areas, dramatic scenes and stories, a mapping journey, a story-station reading area, and other engaging activities allowing them to explore on their own, in small groups, or even as a family.
“This is an important exhibition as it offers children and families in our community an opportunity to experience and enjoy the West in a myriad of new ways,” said Museum President and CEO Steven Karr.
In conjunction with the gallery, several programs for the entire family are offered including drawing, interactive crafts, and “Circle of Stories” – where Native storyteller Patrick Red Bird (Kiowa) will share tales of family, bravery, power, and prestige. Programs are held each Saturday while the exhibition is on display.
Power and Prestige: Headdresses of the American Plains exhibition and related programs are made possible, in part, by grants from Bank of America, the Oklahoma Humanities Council (OHC) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the late Ann S. Alspaugh. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this exhibition and program do not necessarily represent those of OHC or NEH.
Nationally accredited, the Museum is located in Oklahoma City’s Adventure District at the junction of Interstates 44 and 35. For more information about the Museum’s upcoming exhibitions and programming, visit www.nationalcowboymuseum.org or call (405) 478-2250.
